ECHO announces the 100 Homes Campaign—part of a national, three-year program to house 100,000 vulnerable, homeless individuals and families by 2013. As part of the 100,000 Homes initiative, campaign partners are coordinating Austin Registry Week, November 7 – 9, when more than 150 volunteers will take to the city’s streets and homeless shelters to survey and identify Austin’s most vulnerable homeless individuals and families. The information collected during Austin Registry Week will be used to create a by-name registry that will serve to prioritize those homeless individuals who have been living on the streets the longest and quickly move them into permanent housing.

Austin Registry Week Results

The 100 Homes Campaign surveyed the homeless population in Austin over the course of three days (November 7 – 9) and completed 289 surveys. The results revealed 47 percent of those 289 were assessed as vulnerable and at risk of dying within five years if they remain on the streets. Of the 47 percent that were determined to be vulnerable – the average person has been on the street for seven years. More than 120 volunteers from 25 organizations participated in Austin Registry Week.
